Nostell

Time Period:

Built on the site of a Medieval monastery, Nostell is a Georgian mansion built by the Winn family, who owned the estate from 1654. Famous designers and craftsmen were employed to create this Palladian-style building, which was almost never finished!

Top Story

During the 18th-century, Rowland Winn, 5th Baronet, employed Robert Adam to design the interior of the house. Adam also designed the Menagerie Garden, which contained the Menagerie House. Inside was a collection of exotic animals, including a lion, who was rumoured to become ‘unmanageable’ at 4pm every day!
